Samples & interpolations
If your track contains a recorded sample of someone else's music — even a few seconds — you need permission (a sample clearance) from both the master owner and the publisher.
Interpolations (re-recording someone else's melody or lyrics) still require a publishing license.
Rule of thumb: if a fan could recognise it, you need to clear it.
